An Unexpected Urban Oasis – June 2018

I can thoroughly recommend this unexpectedly lovely urban oasis in Perth – the unusually named Tomato Lake which is a haven for wetland birds, especially the Australian White Ibis – there is huge (and noisy!) colony in residence at close quarters to visitors so a great place for the keen photographer to visit. Dogs are allowed on leads too.

It is popular with families especially at weekends and it has a cafe with very reasonably priced drinks and food. This was our first visit but we will definitely return.

Picture Perfect B&B – Bedfordale

March 2018

We’ve discovered a B&B just an hour’s drive from home which lives up to its name – Picture Perfect B&B (in Bedfordale) with local attractions including Churchman Brook Dam, Wungong Dam and the Last Drop Elizabethan Pub.

The pub was our first stop with Millie constantly on the look out for food!

Although the weather was less than ideal, the accommodation more than made up for that and the grounds were a magnet for birds and kangaroos. Can’t wait to go back sometime soon. They don’t normally accept dogs, but because Millie was so well behaved they made an exception for her.

I can thoroughly recommend this B&B for anyone that would like to get out of the city for a day or two to recharge their batteries.

They even included a Welcome for Millie!

Peppermint Grove Beach, nr Capel, WA

June 2018

It had been four years since we last went to Peppermint Grove Beach for a short holiday. We always used to go with our wonderful old dog Shadow but when she died, we just didn’t feel like going back there.

But we now have our gorgeous Millie and the time felt right to return to our old haunt and it was well worth the wait. Millie loved it as much as we expected she would and we all had a wonderful time. It is a perfect spot to see a wide variety of wildlife and when the weather gets in the way, there’s always a log fire and red wine!

In My Garden

Perth weather conditions can be challenging for gardens throughout the year. So early Spring suits my garden best when new life springs into action and for a while looks happy and healthy until lack of water and the harsh heat of summer takes its toll. I took these few photos at the weekend with my macro lens. The bee with lavender was my favourite.

Canning River Regional Park

We had such a lovely walk after discovering Canning River Regional Park for the first time last week, we decided to go again on a different walking trail. Spring flowers were in abundance so here are a few more to add to the collection from the week before. I apologise for my lack of botanical knowledge – I have no idea what the names of the flowers are!

I have lived in Perth for eight and a half years, and visited Canning River Regional Park for the first time today. The weather for this long weekend was dismal, but Sunday started fairly bright and dry so we decided to risk it and took a 20 minute drive to check out this park on the advice of a friend. And we were not disappointed. It was lush and green from all the recent rainfall and many areas were saturated with water which in the summer months would probably be dry and baked hard. So we were lucky enough to see it at its best in terms of the wildlife that the conditions attracted.

We took Millie the dog (pictured below in the car, anxious to be let out to explore!); dogs are welcome on a lead and it was nice for her to enjoy different smells for a change, although this resulted in multiple stops for more sniffing opportunities! Canning River Cafe is welcome at the end of the walk for coffee/tea and cake. We timed our walk perfectly as it started to rain just as we got to the Cafe!
